Benedict Cumberbatch says Sherlock series 4 “might be the end of an era”

October 4, 2016 by Gary Collinson

It’s going to be an exciting couple of months for Benedict Cumberbatch fans. First up, he’ll be taking on the role of the Sorcerer Supreme, Dr. Stephen Strange, in Marvel’s Doctor Strange, before reuniting with Martin Freeman in January for the hotly-anticipated fourth series of Sherlock. However – and here comes the bad news – the upcoming series of the hit BBC show may also be the last.

“It might be the end of an era,” Cumberbatch told GQ. “It feels like the end of an era, to be honest. [Series 4] goes to a place where it will be pretty hard to follow on immediately. We never say never on the show. I’d love to revisit it, I’d love to keep revisiting it, I stand by that. But in the immediate future we all have things that we want to crack on with and we’ve made something very complete as it is, so I think we’ll just wait and see. The idea of never playing him again is really galling.”

Not including The Abominable Bride, there’ll have been a three year gap between series three and four of Sherlock, with two years separating the first, second and third, so of course it’s entirely possible that we will see another series… we may just have a good few years to wait.
