Rumour: Rogue One will open in a way “different than the classic Star Wars films”, won’t have opening crawl

November 3, 2016 by Gary Collinson

This December, Disney and Lucasfilm launch their first standalone Star Wars movie with the release of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. As we’ve heard on several occasions, this first ‘Anthology’ movie – and the subsequent spinoffs, such as the young Han Solo film – will be markedly different from the main Saga entries, and it seems that will extend to the use of the traditional opening crawl.

According to Star Wars News Net, a source they consider to be extremely credible has revealed that Rogue One opens in a way “different than the classic Star Wars films”, meaning we won’t be seeing an opening crawl, and “the film’s introduction of the story to the audience differs from the classic films in the series.”

If you’ve been keeping up to date with all things Rogue One, the lack of a crawl may not be too much of a surprise, given that Lucasfilm’s Kathleen Kennedy revealed back in July that she didn’t believe the Anthology movies would feature the iconic opening.

Will you be disappointed if Rogue One doesn’t have an opening crawl? And if not, how would you like to see it open? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below…

From Lucasfilm comes the first of the Star Wars standalone films, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, an all-new epic adventure. In a time of conflict, a group of unlikely heroes band together on a mission to steal the plans to the Death Star, the Empire’s ultimate weapon of destruction. This key event in the Star Wars timeline brings together ordinary people who choose to do extraordinary things, and in doing so, become part of something greater than themselves.

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story is set for release on December 15th in the UK and December 16th in the States, with a cast that includes Felicity Jones (The Theory of Everything), Diego Luna (Milk), Ben Mendelsohn (The Dark Knight Rises), Donnie Yen (Ip Man), Jiang Wen (Let the Bullets Fly), Forest Whitaker (The Last King of Scotland), Alan Tudyk (Con Man), Riz Ahmed (Nightcrawler), Genevieve O’Reilly (Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith), Jimmy Smits (Star Wars: Episode II – Attack of the Clones), James Earl Jones (Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope), Valene Kane (The Fall), Alistair Petrie (The Night Manager), Warwick Davis (Star Wars: Episode IV – Return of the Jedi) and Jonathan Aris (Sherlock).
