Steven Spielberg developing a live-action Halo series for Xbox Live

May 21, 2013 by admin

As part of its eagerly-awaited Xbox One announcement today, Microsoft has revealed that its set to expand the Halo universe by teaming up with Steven Spielberg for a live-action adaptation of the blockbuster video game franchise, which will be available exclusively on Xbox Live.

At this point in time, it’s unclear how much involvement Spielberg will have with the series, although he appeared in a video as part of the official announcement, stating that he was excited to explore “the heroes, worlds, and wonders that Halo will take us to.”

First released back in 2001 on the Xbox 1 original Xbox, the first-person shooter Halo: Combat Evolved was a smash hit, spawning the sequels Halo 2, Halo 3 and Halo 4, as well as the video game spin-offs Halo Wars, Halo 3: ODST and Halo Reach. The franchise has also expanded beyond the video game medium with a range of adaptations including the anime series Halo Legends and numerous books and graphic novels.

The new series won’t be the first time Halo has received a live-action adaptation, with the five-episode web series Halo 4: Forward Unto Dawn arriving last year as a marketing tie-in with the latest video game.
