Scream TV series to use “darker, more grounded, evolved version of the mask”

November 16, 2014 by Gary Collinson

Last month it was revealed that MTV’s upcoming Scream TV series would not be using the traditional Ghostface mask from the movie franchise, having opted against securing the rights to the design from Fun World, the creators of the iconic mask. Naturally this left many people a little confused, and now MTV’s executive vice president of scripted development Mina Lefevre has attempted – pretty badly, it must be said – to clear up said confusion.

“It’s a darker, almost more grounded, evolved version of the mask,” Lefevre tells EW. “It’s something we’re constantly talking about. How did that mask become that mask? What’s its purpose? How did it evolve? If the Scream movie mask was the more plastic version, for a lack of a better description, this one is a more organic looking and frankly darker version. It’s a little preliminary, obviously because we haven’t even started our writers room, to say that we will never see that other mask or not.”

So, does this mean the series will be a prequel to the first movie? A reboot? And how will the whole “viral video” aspect play into things?

Scream is set to premiere on MTV in October 2015, with a cast that includes Bex Taylor-Klaus, Audrey Jensen, Willa Fitzgerald, John Karna, Connor Weil, Amadeus Serafini, Carlson Young, Tracy Middendorf and Joel Gretsch.
