The latest issue of Empire Magazine has already given us some new images from Avengers: Age of Ultron [see here and here], as well as comments from Joss Whedon suggesting he won’t be back in the director’s chair for Avengers: Infinity War [see here], and now we have some quotes from Robert Downey Jr. about the upcoming Phase Three ensemble Captain America: Civil War, which will see Iron Man squaring off against Steve Rogers:
“They said to me, ‘If we have you, we can do this, or Cap 3 has to be something else’,” said Downey with regards to how the project came around. “It’s nice to feel needed. And at this point it’s about helping each other, too. I look at it as a competition and I go, ‘Wow, maybe if these two franchises teamed up and I can take even a lesser position, with people I like and directors I respect, maybe we can keep things bumping along.'”
As for how Stark could find himself at odds with Captain America, Downey said: “The main thing to me is, what sort of incident could occur, and what sort of framework could we find Tony in? The clues about where we might find him next are in Ultron. But what would it take for Tony to completely turn around everything he’s stood for? Joss brings this up all the time. It’s kind of weird that these guys would have all these throw downs all over planet Earth and yet when the movie’s over, nobody minds. What would the American government do if this were real? Wouldn’t it be interesting to see Tony doing something you wouldn’t imagine?”
Meanwhile, in other Civil War news, an alleged casting call for the film has revealed that Rush star Daniel Bruhl is set to play the Nazi/Hydra scientist Baron Zemo, one of Cap’s most iconic adversaries and the character who pretty much everyone expected him to be portraying when his involvement was first announced.
Captain America: Civil War is set for release on April 29th 2016 in the UK and May 6th in the States, with a cast that includes Chris Evans (Captain America), Robert Downey Jr. (Iron Man), Anthony Mackie (Falcon), Scarlett Johansson (Black Widow), Samuel L. Jackson (Nick Fury), Sebastian Stan (The Winter Soldier), Frank Grillo (Crossbones) and Daniel Bruhl (Rush).
