Comic Book Review – Witchblade #180

February 12, 2015 by Villordsutch

Villordsutch reviews Witchblade #180…

DARKNESS FALLS IN WITCHBLADE! In another life Jackie Estacado was Sara Pezzini’s lover and the father of her child. Now he has used the power of the Darkness to endanger the whole of human existence and only the Witchblade can stop him. Here at last is the untold story…The Death Of Jackie Estacado!

It’s good to walk in on a comic and be gripped instantly.  I’m giving a spoiler warning for anybody who has been hiding under a Witchblade-proof spoiler rock for a couple of weeks.  Spoilers! Jackie is dead! Spoilers! In the first few pages this is confirmed by Sara blaming the lopped off head of Jackie currently residing on a small table.  Just to confirm Jackie currently isn’t defending himself against Sara’s acquisitions, so I’m assuming his death is confirmed.  What follows in the comic is how we get to the table and the blame game.

Aram the Witch-King has arrived at Sara’s – the Witchblade – home, and he’s informed her of Jackie’s plan to bring an end to the balance between light and dark by opening all the portals and allowing all the ancients ones back into the world.  Sara without much trust in Aram is aware that Jackie will however attempt this and goes to Jackie’s home to stop him; though she doesn’t want too for her own personal reasons.  These reasons being are that Jackie’s dead girlfriend, Jenny, who he resurrected is currently under the belief that their daughter, called Hope, is really their child; however the child is born to Sara and Jackie, who both Sara and Jackie sacrificed to save the world, but Jackie supposedly didn’t kill her.  You can understand the issues Sara has?  It’s once Sara – as the Witchblade – enters the house that it rapidly goes downhill for her.  We discover the Jenny is in a shock like state trying not to upset Hope, as Hope is reanimating dead cats and the corpse of a recently deceased nanny.  Hopes powers are strong and then she notices Sara, her mother, the Witchblade.

Jackie as yet hasn’t even shown his face as yet – never mind his head – in this story and this comic is both outstanding and gripping.  David Hine has delivered in these short pages something truly amazing and quite horrific to boot; added to this we have the fantastic artwork and colours from Gabriel Rearte and Betsy Gonia (respectively), and you’ve got a beautiful and terrifying looking comic.  When Sara and Jenny walk upstairs and the male figure is stood in the shadows that image is utterly brilliant!  This comic reads and looks perfect.

Darkness Falls: Part 1 is a brilliant opener and should not be missed by anybody!  Today you need to buy Witchblade #180.

Villordsutch likes his sci-fi and looks like a tubby Viking according to his children. Visit his website and follow him on Twitter.
