Earlier this month it was announced that ABC is developing a spinoff from Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., and now Deadline has revealed that Adrianne Palicki (Bobbi Morse/Mockingbird) and Nick Blood (Lance Hunter) are in talks to topline the project.
The spinoff has been developed by Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. executive producer Jeffrey Bell and co-executive producer Paul Zbyszewski, and at this point it is unclear whether the plan is to air the new series alongside S.H.I.E.L.D., or go down the Agent Carter route and show it during the midseason break.
The Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. spinoff is one of two new Marvel shows in development at ABC, with John Ridley (American Crime) also working on an as-yet-unrevealed project.

Why are they making a spin off from a show with such low ratings as “Agents…”
Every time it’s up for renewal there’s debate whether it’ll make the cut.
It has fewer viewers than Castle for Pete’s sake.
It is number 25 in the top 25 rated shows among adults – and it get’s a spin off?

Agents of SHIELD’s first season had 8.31 million viewers. That’s better than Arrow, which had 3.68 million viewers first season and 3.28 million viewers second season, yet when Arrow was renewed for a fourth season and gets a new spin-off, everyone says that that should be expected.

Arrow is on cable, Agents is on ABC, a network. Huge difference. A cable show with 3 mill. viewers is successfull. A network show with 3 mill. viewers is cancelled after 4 episodes.

Okay, Rookie Blue airs on ABC, the same channel, and has been renewed for five seasons now despite averaging just over 1 million viewers.

Do you know the website called Wikipedia?
Because on that webiste (which is very useful, you should try it) you’ll se that Rookie Blue has, in fact, 5 mill. viewers.
You’ll also see that it isn’t a “network” show, it is a Canadian production, that the ABC network then buys. Which means that 1: the choice of a renewal is made by the canadian station that produces it, not ABC and 2: The need for ratings isn’t as big, because it costs a shitload less to buy than it does to home produce an episode of SHIELD.

Sorry I got the Canadian viewership mixed up with the United States viewership. That was a bad example but there are others. First season of Nashville (also airs on ABC) averaged 6.86 million and it got renewed for a third season. 8.31 is still considerably better.

But at least it doesn’t get a spin off, which is my question about SHIELD. Renewal, yeah sure, being number 25 is still in the top 25, but a spin off?
