The Week in Star Wars – Episode VIII set photos and scene descriptions, Young Han Solo casting update, The Force Awakens concept art, Vader and Ahsoka and more

March 20, 2016 by Luke Owen

Pre-order Star Wars: The Force Awakens via Amazon UK or Amazon US

More set photos have landed for Episode VIII in this edition of The Week in Star Wars. We’ve also got some casting updates for Young Han Solo, a load of concept art for Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Rogue One comic book details and more…

Kicking things off with Rian Johnson’s Star Wars: Episode VIII and following the set photos released last week, some more have landed online that show off some new alien creatures and what looks to be a landspeeder. As Oli and I discussed on the Flickering Myth Podcast, this looks vastly different to the style and design we’re used to seeing in Star Wars which is very interesting…

…In addition to the set photos, a rumoured description of a scene between Poe Dameron (Oscar Isaac) and Laura Dern’s as-yet-unrevealed character arrived online this week; no idea whether there’s any truth to it (it’s Latino-Review, so…), but if you’re interested you can check it out here…

…John Boyega celebrated his birthday this week, and Mark Hamill offers his congratulations on Twitter, taking the opportunity to have a little fun with the fans by teasing that Finn could be the son of Luke Skywalker: “@JohnBoyega is a swell fella who’s just sonsational in Episode VIII,” tweeted Hamill. “Hmmm-Typo or spoiler? YOU decide! #Troll”…

…Sticking with Episode VIII and Billie Lourd (daughter of Carrie Fisher) has told the press this week that her small role from Star Wars: The Force Awakens will be larger in the upcoming movie. Remember when people claimed she was playing a young Princess Leia in a flashback? Good times. To be honest, it would be hard for Lourd’s role to be any smaller in the next film…

…Speaking of The Force Awakens and a trailer arrived online for the feature-length documentary Secrets of The Force Awakens: A Cinematic Journey ahead of its premiere at SXSW. If you weren’t there to see it, you’ll all be able to catch it as a special feature on the Star Wars: The Force Awakens Blu-ray next month…

…As is customary following the release of a big movie, a huge batch of concept art from Star Wars: The Force Awakens landed online this week, including some awesome alternative designs for Kylo Ren…

…It looks like we may not have too long to wait to find out who’ll be succeeding (well, or preceding, from a certain point of view…) Harrison Ford in the role of the young Han Solo, with reports this week claiming that the shortlist is now down to three names: Alden Ehrenreich (Hail, Caesar!), Jack Reynor (Transformers: Age of Extinction) and Taron Egerton (Eddie the Eagle)…

…One actor now out of the running is Miles Teller, and the Whiplash and Fantastic Four star spoke a little about his audition during an interview this week: “I had never even seen any of the original Star Wars movies until maybe a month or a couple weeks before my first audition because I was like, ‘I should check this out’. It holds up. I just love Harrison Ford. I think that’s a great character. I love his brand, I mean so many guys would’ve played that part so wrong and he has humor at the right times. Harrison Ford is a very big actor, when you see the facial expressions and the things he does he goes big, but he’s just always the coolest guy in the room and he’s got all of those great qualities…”

…Moving over to the video game world and Electronic Arts and DICE released a gameplay trailer for the new Outer Rim DLC for Star Wars Battlefront, which you can watch here…

…If you missed this week’s episode of Star Wars Rebels, you can watch a clip of it here, and the Rebels Recon featurette here (and if you did see the episode, here’s Chris Cooper’s review). Meanwhile, we also have a clip and images from this coming Wednesday’s episode ‘The Mystery of Chopper Base’ which you can see here, and with the big confrontation between former master and apprentice drawing closer, Disney XD has also debuted a featurette that explores the history between Darth Vader and Ahsoka Tano…

…Marvel Comics has announced that it will set the stage for December’s Rogue One: A Star Wars Story with a three-issue prequel and one-shot leading in to the first Star Wars Anthology movie. Details are scarce, but the limited series will get underway in October…

…And lastly, here’s your comic book preview for the week with Marvel’s Star Wars #17: Han takes Luke out to fly the Falcon with him! Meanwhile…Leia and a few of her “friends” have troubles of their own… The rebel prison base is under siege!

That’s all for this week – may The Force be with you. And don’t forget to pre-order Star Wars: The Force Awakens via Amazon UK or Amazon US…
