Helen Mirren asked Vin Diesel for a role in The Fate of the Furious

March 16, 2017 by Robert Kojder

We may not have seen any footage yet of Helen Mirren’s The Fate of the Furious character, but we do now know how she found herself attached to the project.

In the latest issue of Total Film, Vin Diesel revealed: “People don’t know that I’m the one working for a year beforehand with the writers and coming up with the story. She came up to me at a party last year and said, ‘I want to be in Fast & Furious with you.’ The script was [already] greenlit, but she told the right person, because a week later she got written in.”

Considering that Mirren was written into the movie after a finished draft of the script, it is unlikely that the character will play a major role in the demolition derby heist shenanigans, but it’s reassuring knowing that she is enthusiastic about the blockbuster and not simply cashing in a paycheck.

Now that Dom and Letty are on their honeymoon and Brian and Mia have retired from the game—and the rest of the crew has been exonerated—the globetrotting team has found a semblance of a normal life. But when a mysterious woman (Oscar winner Charlize Theron) seduces Dom into the world of crime he can’t seem to escape and a betrayal of those closest to him, they will face trials that will test them as never before.

From the shores of Cuba and the streets of New York City to the icy plains off the arctic Barents Sea, our elite force will crisscross the globe to stop an anarchist from unleashing chaos on the world’s stage…and to bring home the man who made them a family.

The Fate of the Furious is directed by F. Gary Gray (Straight Outta Compton) and features a cast that includes Vin Diesel, Dwayne Johnson, Michelle Rodriguez, Tyrese Gibson, Ludacris, Eva Mendes, Elsa Pataky, Lucas Black, Nathalie Emmanuel, Kurt Russell, Kristofer Hivju, Scott Eastwood, Helen Mirren and Charlize Theron. It is set for release on April 14th 2017, followed by Fast & Furious 9 on April 19th 2019 and Fast & Furious 10 on April 2nd 2021.
