The Young Pope to receive follow up series The New Pope

Paolo Sorrentino is creating a follow up series to The Young Pope, suitably titled, The New Pope.

While it was said that Sorrentino was working on a second season to the HBO/Sky /Canal Plus drama The Young Pope, details were still unclear as to what exactly would happen to the Jude Law series.

We now have our answer, and it’s not quite what anyone expected. Instead of continuing on the story of Jude Law’s dynamic and tortured Pope Pius XIII, Sorrentino is instead crafting a successor series titled The New Pope.

The New Pope is said to be set in the same world as the previous show, in the mould of series like Fargo and True Detective by not being a direct second season.

The decision seems a little odd, considering the fact that there were plenty of dangling threads at the end of season one, and seemingly numerous options going forward. But for whatever reason, this new direction has been decided upon.

Concrete details aren’t currently available but sources close to the project say that certain characters will be returning for the show along with a host of new faces.

Where that leads Jude Law and his character Lenny, we do not know. Again, sources say that a reappearance by Law in a much smaller capacity hasn’t be ruled out.

Sky Italia chief of content Andrea Scrosati told Variety that “Just like The Young Pope, Sorrentino is writing the script for the new show, but it will have a different twist than what would be expected,”

Sorrentino will also be once again directing all 10 episodes.

The Young Pope is being labelled as one of the best new show’s of the year after debuting in the US on HBO, so this is certainly an interesting development.

Fans of course will be happy that show will be returning in some capacity, albeit in a new form, and now waiting eagerly until further details of the project are revealed.
