Deadwood revival moving forward at HBO

July 27, 2017 by Jordan Jones

This one has been rumbling for a while. Talk of a Deadwood revival has been going on for years now, and even the stars of the show have recently expressed their desire to see the project happen in. Now, it looks like HBO is finally ready to make it official as HBO Programming Exec Casey Bloys has  announced the project at the Television Critics Association summer press tour (via ScreenRant). The revival will take the form of a 2-hour movie. During the event, Bloys stressed the importance of striking the right balance, and finding the right script:

“The one thing that I was concerned about was I wanted a script that would stand on its own [for Deadwood fans and non-fans] … David totally delivered on that. I think it’s a terrific script. If we can do it on a budget that makes sense for us, and if we can get the cast together, we’re inclined to do it.”

It’s going to be very interesting to see what direction the revival will take. After all, the actors have aged considerably since Deadwood abruptly ended on HBO. Will they try to overlook the actors ages, and continue on with the shows story? Or will there be a time jump? It’s likely that the writers will go with the latter. This could also help explain the lack of Powers Boothe’s character Cy Tolliver, as the actor sadly passed away this year. The biggest hurdle, of course, is making sure all of the actors are available. Much of the cast of Deadwood have gone on to have very busy careers.

There is currently no release date set for the Deadwood revival.
