Game of Thrones director discuses the season 7 finale’s major death

August 31, 2017 by Samuel Brace

The director of Game of Thrones’ season 7 finale Jeremy Podeswa has discussed a major death from the episode ‘The Dragon and the Wolf’. Spoilers for the episode follow. You have been warned…

Petyr Baelish was one of the longest surviving characters on HBO’s epic fantasy drama, having been around since season 1.

It has been revealed over the years that this master manipulator had been behind many of the events which led to the show’s central conflicts, pulling the strings, creating chaos in order that he could rise and claim the Iron Throne for himself.

Alas, such grand plans and schemes rarely turn out as the perpetrator would hope, and Littlefinger, played by Aidan Gillen, found himself on the wrong end of Arya’s sword during this season’s finale.

The director of the episode, Jeremy Podeswa, has spoken to Variety about the Machiavellian like character and how he felt about his death.

“Aidan is such a great actor and it was such a joy to see him do this scene,” said Podeswa. “You really see another side of Littlefinger that you’ve never seen before, which is vulnerability. He’s a master manipulator, always in control, and can play games with the best of them. But here’s a situation where the tables are completely turned on him and he has to fight for his life. I think what’s surprising is how much you care about his death, and that’s all Aidan…In that moment, you can’t help but feel for him.”

Littlefinger was certainly one of the most interesting characters on the show, and Podeswa is right, a lot of that is down to the performance of Gillen, helping to create a character that was impossible not to pay attention to.
