Burger King Russia wants It banned because Pennywise looks like Ronald McDonald

September 27, 2017 by Samuel Brace

The Russian division of Burger King has demanded that It be banned in the country.

One might think that a ban being called would pertain to the film’s frightening nature or disturbing content, but this has nothing to do with why Burger King wants the film banished.

The company is claiming that the movie’s villain looks too much like McDonalds’ Ronald McDonald and is therefore working as an advertisement for their fast food competitor.

A complaint has been filed with Russia’s Federal Anti-Monopoly Service (FAS), with whom the ban has been demanded.

A spokeswoman for the agency has confirmed to The Hollywood Reporter that the complaint has been received and that it is now being evaluated.

“We can’t be concerned with the content of the film because the writer and director have their own creative understanding of any character,” she said, then stating that they would need to determine if there was any advertising or product placement present in the film.

It was released in Russia on September 9 and has so far grossed $14 million.
