Kit Harington feels Season 8 is the right time to end Game of Thrones: “I wouldn’t want it to go on any longer than it has”

October 18, 2017 by Jordan Jones

It’s been quite a long run for Game of Thrones — the show premiered all the way back in 2011 — and it’s a testament to the shows quality that many fans feel eight seasons is simply not long enough to finish telling the massive story of A Song of Ice and Fire. However, one key cast member wholly disagrees. Talking to Digital Spy about his upcoming BBC One period-drama Gunpowder, Jon Snow actor Kit Harington expressed his feelings of relief over Game of Thrones Season 8 being its last:

“Thrones is coming to the end at the right time for me, and everyone involved in it. I was exchanging emails with David [Benioff] and Dan [Weiss] last night and we were all getting very soppy and emotional with each other. It will be liberating, just the thought of having a whole year free – you shoot for six months, but half of the projects you might want to do will have started shooting before that six months is over. There’s a lot of things you can’t do. I’m looking forward to finishing, and eight years is the right amount of time. I wouldn’t want it to go on any longer than it has. I have other ideas I’d like to look at producing.”

It’s easy to feel a bit of disbelief that an actor could possibly be tired of making such an amazing piece of television, but actors need variety too. Telling the same story for years — from a cast-member perspective — could start to feel a bit tiring. So while it’s excellent for us, it’s a sure thing that the cast would probably love to explore new projects using the fame that Game of Thrones has given them.

Game of Thrones season 8 starts production this month, and will reportedly wrap in summer 2018. This also ties in with the rumor that the final season won’t air until 2019.
