Phase four of the Marvel Cinematic Universe will take on a “new story” according to director James Gunn.
It has been thought for a while that once Avengers: Infinity War and its sequel arrive, that Phase Four of the MCU will be somewhat of a new start for the superhero series. Just quite how it will look, we do not know, but James Gunn has recently weighed in on his twitter page, giving his take.
The director of both Guardians of the Galaxy films responded when asked by a fan if the MCU will end after Phase Three:
1/2 No. Read Kevin Feige’s quotes & not the static around them. It’s the end of one long story & the beginning of another. https://t.co/NA1f0EnQeE

2/2 And one of the films that will kickstart the new story will be #GotGVol3. https://t.co/NA1f0EnQeE

There you have it. The connected universe that has spawned so many imitators will continue beyond Avengers 4, but story wise, things will likely be very different for its cast of heroes.
