A Beta Ray Bill cameo was cut from Marvel’s Thor: Ragnarok

November 5, 2017 by Gary Collinson

If you were looking closely, you may have noticed a statue of Beta Ray Bill on the giant tower on Sakaar in Thor: Ragnarok, and it turns out that the fan-favourite Karbonite was originally going to make a cameo in the film, but it was felt that such a quick appearance would not have done the character justice.

“There was a Beta Ray Bill [cameo], but it was so quick that you would have the same complaints that you have now,” Feige told Crave Online. “He was in it a little bit more and it just didn’t do justice. And the feeling is, if you can’t do it justice, do it later.”

Created by Walt Simonson, the alien Beta Ray Bill made his first appearance in Thor #337 in 1983, where he was deemed worthy of wielding Mjolnir and actually defeated Thor in single combat for possession of the weapon, only for Odin to then grant him his own weapon, Stormbreaker.

While Bill has made a number of animated appearances, we’re yet to see the character in live action – although based upon Feige’s comments above, it definitely seems to be on the cards at some point down the line.

In Marvel Studios’ “Thor: Ragnarok,” Thor is imprisoned on the other side of the universe without his mighty hammer and finds himself in a race against time to get back to Asgard to stop Ragnarok—the destruction of his homeworld and the end of Asgardian civilization—at the hands of an all-powerful threat, the ruthless Hela. But first he must survive a deadly gladiatorial contest that pits him against his former ally and fellow Avenger—the Incredible Hulk.

Thor: Ragnarok is directed by Taika Waititi (What We Do in the Shadows) and features a cast that includes Chris Hemsworth as Thor, Tom Hiddleston as Loki, Anthony Hopkins as Odin, Idris Elba as Heimdall and Mark Ruffalo as the Hulk, Cate Blanchett as Hela, Tessa Thompson as Valkyrie, Jeff Goldblum as the Grandmaster, Karl Urban as Skurge, Taika Waititi as Korg, Clancy Brown as Surtur, Rachel House as Topaz, Tadanobu Asano as Hogun, Ray Stevenson as Volstagg and Zachary Levi as Fandral.
