DC’s Legends of Tomorrow Season 3 Episode 4 – ‘Phone Home’

November 4, 2017 by Jessie Robertson

Jessie Robertson reviews the fourth episode of DC’s Legends of Tomorrow season 3…

Legends basically parodies (?) ET and it’s marvelous.

When the Arrowverse started, it began with Arrow; a dark, brutal journey through vigilantism that was still part CW show with hot, beautiful people in ever-changing relationships but with mysterious pasts. When The Flash arrived, it ushered in a new era of constant humor coupled with light-hearted superhero action. Now, here we are, 4 shows deep, and Legends is really finding it’s stride as a show that can simply have fun and not have to worry about what famous character is debuting or what surprise super villain is waiting to be the big bad….it’s just goofy and mimics every wonderful 80’s property the creators obviously idolized.

The genius of all of this, is they basically ripped the exact plot, with a baby Dominator being the anachronism as Ray’s “ET”, but everything else is the same; but you have the team playing witness as the plot unfolds and just being so much fun to watch, and to listen to. Rory cheering on young Haircut when he’s stealing candy for Gumball (cute name for ugly creature), and Ray upset he was doing it. Nate noticing Ray’s mom was hot (of course being paired with Amaya) and that whole situation, everything works so well, it’s like a great 80’s sci-fi comedy and now this show, which had an awful season one, has found its true niche, and only because of so much that has already been done in this TV world where they can go here and the writers weekly prove this is what they should be doing.

Meanwhile, Rory does what he’s been doing so wonderfully this season and that’s just casually doing whatever he wants, whether it’s to join a mission or not; to help Stein go back and not miss his daughter’s birth of his grandson. The plight of Firestorm is one easily cured and will probably be handled pretty well on the show and I like how in the midst of everything else going on, they find time to plant those seeds. There’s also a great bit about the mother Dominator (“Mominator”) being involved here and continuing the trend of a former major villain showing up in Legends as a slightly less problematic situation.

So, this is a great episode – there’s also little Ray, the bike riding scene over the moon and Nate being his goofy self as always, including standing next to a DeLorean saying “now this is a time machine” and wanting to hit on Ray’s mom and telling her “There’s a cougar on the loose.” Keep it up Legends; you may have broken Time, but you’ve fixed the formula to this show.
