Director Joe Russo suggests fans look back to Captain America: Civil War for a hint about Avengers 4

January 24, 2018 by Jordan Jones

Marvel has been tight-lipped when it comes to Avengers 4. Which is not exactly surprising, given that Avengers: Infinity War hasn’t even hit theaters yet. However, that hasn’t stopped rampant fan speculation, which has only been fueled by some leaked set images that appeared to imply the use of time-travel in the film. Will we see Tony Stark, and company travelling back in time to fix some kind of mistake made in Avengers: Infinity War? Talking on MTV’s Happy Sad Confused podcast, director Joe Russo was asked about these leaked photos, and also suggested that fans look back to the MCU’s past, in order to get a hint for the future:

“It’s interesting, because yes, there are photos that always leak, and then there’s lots of conjecture about what those photos mean. Certainly there is a five-minute sequence in Civil War around a piece of technology that was laid in for a very specific reason. So if you go back and look at that film, you may get a hint as to a direction.”

The featured technology Joe Russo is referring to is most likely “Binary Augmented Retro-Framing”, or… B.A.R.F.  So, what is B.A.R.F.? It’s a technology that “hijacks the Hippocampus” (according to Tony Stark himself), allowing users to revisit past memories in vivid detail. Stark suggests in Captain America: Civil War that this technology could be used for therapeutic purposes; you’ll know this if you’ve seen Captain America: Civil War, as Tony actually revisits his final moments with his family using the tech.

So, how could this technology be employed in Avengers 4? Let us know your theories in the comments below…

An unprecedented cinematic journey ten years in the making and spanning the entire Marvel Cinematic Universe, Marvel Studios’ “Avengers: Infinity War” brings to the screen the ultimate, deadliest showdown of all time. The Avengers and their Super Hero allies must be willing to sacrifice all in an attempt to defeat the powerful Thanos before his blitz of devastation and ruin puts an end to the universe.

Avengers: Infinity War opens on April 27th 2018 in the UK and May 4th 2018 in the US and will feature an all-star cast including Robert Downey Jr. (Iron Man), Chris Evans (Captain America), Mark Ruffalo (Hulk), Chris Hemsworth (Thor), Scarlett Johansson (Black Widow), Jeremy Renner (Hawkeye), Chadwick Boseman (Black Panther), Tom Holland (Spider-Man), Sebastian Stan (Winter Soldier), Anthony Mackie (Falcon), Paul Rudd (Ant-Man), Paul Bettany (Vision), Elizabeth Olsen (Scarlet Witch), Don Cheadle (War Machine), Josh Brolin (Thanos), Benedict Cumberbatch (Doctor Strange), Benedict Wong (Wong), Chris Pratt (Star-Lord), Zoe Saldana (Gamora), Dave Bautista (Drax), Bradley Cooper (Rocket), Sean Gunn (Rocket, Kraglin), Vin Diesel (Groot), Karen Gillan (Nebula), Pom Klementieff (Mantis), Tessa Thompson (Valkyrie), Tom Hiddleston (Loki), Samuel L. Jackson (Nick Fury), Cobie Smulders (Maria Hill), Benicio Del Toro (The Collector), Danai Gurira (Okoye), Winston Duke (M’Baku) and Peter Dinklage and Terry Notary in as-yet-unrevealed roles.
