Henry Cavill on Justice League reshoots, Moustache-Gate, and keeping Superman out of the marketing

May 17, 2018 by Gary Collinson

After restoring some pride to the DC Extended Universe back in May with the release of the critical and commercial hit Wonder Woman, Warner Bros. hit a major bump in the DCEU road later in the year with Justice League.

What was intended as DC’s answer to Marvel’s juggernaut Avengers series – and the launching pad for solo movies such as Aquaman, The Flash and Cyborg – ultimately proved to be a major misfire for the franchise which saw Warner Bros. embarking on a major behind-the-scenes shake-up at DC Films in an attempt to salvage its superhero universe.

So far, we’re yet to hear any major criticism from the cast (unsurprisingly, given that they remain under contract), but in an interview with Empire (via CBM), Superman actor Henry Cavill has weighed in on one of the film’s biggest – and most hilarious – complaints: Superman’s CGI shave.

“When we decided to go for the moustache [in Mission: Impossible – Fallout], I certainly wasn’t expecting all the events to unfold as they were going to unfold,” said Cavill. “I wasn’t expecting Justice League reshoots to be as extensive as they were. When it came to that, it was one of those things where I’m in the middle of another movie, and to change my look for a movie that should have finished already becomes a real problem. And as you will see when the movie comes out, to have a fake moustache on would not have been a possibility. You’ll think, ‘Okay, yeah, a fake moustache would perhaps have been blown off in this situation.’ Unfortunately, it led to much dismay when Justice League came out, but that’s the nature of these things. You can’t win every time.”

Cavill was also asked for his thoughts on the decision to keep Superman out of the film’s marketing campaign, despite the fact that everyone in the audience already knew that the Man of Steel was going to feature:

“Yeah. Right there, with no moustache, at the very beginning of the movie [Laughs]. Well, that whole concept was faintly ridiculous and I honestly believe everyone viewed it as such. Of course, if I’m on the press tour I’m in the movie. Obviously, you knew, and that was a different little tap dance we danced together. But for the audience, I wanted to leave some mystery. I think it’s important to have some mystery in movies these days.”

Finally, he also addressed the critical backlash to the movie, adding that: “I think all these things have their place and their time. There are many reasons why the audience have responded in the way they responded. It’s all lessons learned.”

Let’s hope the lessons pay off when Cavill next returns as Superman, which – if reports are to be believed – will either be for a cameo in Shazam!, or the long-rumoured Man of Steel sequel, rumoured to be targeting a 2020 release date.

Fueled by his restored faith in humanity and inspired by Superman’s selfless act, Bruce Wayne enlists the help of his newfound ally, Diana Prince, to face an even greater enemy. Together, Batman and Wonder Woman work quickly to find and recruit a team of metahumans to stand against this newly awakened threat. But despite the formation of this unprecedented league of heroes—Batman, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, Cyborg and The Flash—it may already be too late to save the planet from an assault of catastrophic proportions.

Justice League reunites Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice stars Henry Cavill as Superman, Ben Affleck as Batman, Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman, Ray Fisher as Cyborg, Jason Momoa as Aquaman, Ezra Miller as The Flash, Amy Adams as Lois Lane, Jeremy Irons as Alfred Pennyworth, Diane Lane as Martha Kent, Jesse Eisenberg as Lex Luthor, Connie Nielsen as Queen Hippolyta and Robin Wright as General Antiope alongside J.K. Simmons (Whiplash) as Commissioner Gordon, Amber Heard (The Danish Girl) as Mera and Ciaran Hinds (Game of Thrones) as Steppenwolf.
