Solo: A Star Wars Story suffers disastrous second weekend, set to become the lowest grossing Star Wars movie

June 3, 2018 by Gary Collinson

Disney and Lucasfilm’s Solo: A Star Wars Story suffered a rather poor opening last weekend with just $148 million worldwide, and things certainly haven’t gotten any better for the Anthology movie second time around.

Domestically, Solo earned $29 million – the lowest second weekend for any Star Wars movie since the days of the Original Trilogy. It didn’t fare much better internationally either with an additional $30.3 million, taking its worldwide haul to $264.2 million.

Given its steep second weekend decline, it now seems that the movie may struggle to hit $400 million by the end of its run, which must surely be a hugely disappointing return for Disney and Lucasfilm after pumping $250 million plus marketing costs into the film.

It also looks all but assured that Solo will end up the lowest-grossing chapter of the Star Wars series, failing to reach the $538.4 million haul of 1980’s The Empire Strikes Back. It will certainly be interesting to see how Disney reacts to this box office failure in terms of its future Star Wars plans.
