Rumour: Zendaya wanted for Ariel role in The Little Mermaid

August 25, 2018 by Amie Cranswick

Over the past few years Disney has made a big push to revisit its animated back catalogue with a series of live-action movies, and in 2016 it was announced that The Little Mermaid would be one of the films to receive the remake treatment.

Since, then, it has been announced that Alan Menken will be back as the film’s composer and songwriter, teaming with Hamilton creator Lin-Manuel Miranda, while Rob Marshall (Into the Woods, Mary Poppins Returns) is said to be Disney’s top pick to direct from a script by Jane Goldman (Kick-Ass, Kingsman).

Well, if a rumour from That Hashtag Show is to be believed, we may now have our Ariel, as the site is claiming that Disney has offered the lead role to Spider-Man: Homecoming and The Greatest Showman star Zendaya.

This is unconfirmed and should be treated as a rumour for the time being, but the singer and actress is the first name to be mentioned as a potential candidate to play Ariel.

Although Lindsay Lohan did rather ambitiously throw her hat into the ring for the part back in February of last year.

Zendaya is currently shooting the Marvel sequel Spider-Man: Far From Home, and has the animated comedy Smallfoot set to open in theaters this September. Let us know in the comments below if you think she’d make a good choice for Ariel…
