Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse almost featured Tobey Maguire, Andrew Garfield and Tom Holland

January 23, 2019 by Gary Collinson

Sony’s Oscar-nominated animated feature Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse featured several alternate incarnations of the web-slinger, but it turns out it almost featured three more in Tobey Maguire, Andrew Garfield and Tom Holland.

Speaking on The Q&A, co-director Rodney Rothman has revealed that a scene was written which would have featured the three live-action incarnations of the wall-crawler, but it was ultimately dropped over fears about confusing the audience.

“I wrote a scene that had every, that had Tom Holland and Andrew Garfield and Tobey Maguire in the same scene and… I don’t want to get into it but I did write that scene, but there’s a lot of anxiety, there’s a lot of anxiety around the movie generally and there was anxiety about confusing people.”

It’s previously been revealed that Tobey Maguire was also considered for the role of Peter Parker in the animated film, but again the idea was ultimately nixed, with Jake Johnson coming in to voice the character instead.

Sony has already announced that it is working on a sequel to Into the Spider-Verse, so perhaps we may get to see Maguire, Garfield and Holland popping up at some point after all. Is that something you’d like to see? Let us know in the comments below or on our social media channels…
