DC Universe cancels Swamp Thing after a single episode

June 6, 2019 by Gary Collinson

Less than a week after the premiere of the first episode on DC Universe, it has been announced that the James Wan-produced live-action Swamp Thing series has been cancelled and will not be picked up for a second season.

If you’ve been keeping up to date with all things Swamp Thing, the news may not be too surprising, given that DC halted production on the first season back in April with three episodes of the planned thirteen remaining, scaling the order back to a ten-episode season.

As yet, there’s been no official word as to why the show has been cancelled, but the North Carolina Governor’s Office has refuted a rumour that the state cut back a production grant leading to budgetary concerns.

Deadline meanwhile suggests that WarnerMedia executives were not high on the series, and that the entire DC Universe platform is being “reevaluated” following AT&T’s acquisition of Time Warner and the planned launch of a brand new WarnerMedia streaming service.

The good news for fans, however, is that the plan is to continue debuting the remaining nine episodes of the season on a weekly basis every Friday, through to the series finale on August 2nd.

Swamp Thing features a cast that includes Crystal Reed (Gotham) as Abby Arcane, Andy Bean (It: Chapter Two) as Alec Holland, Will Patton (Halloween) as Avery Sutherland, Maria Sten (Channel Zero) as Liz Tremayne, Jennifer Beals (The L World) as Sheriff Lucilia Cable, Jeryl Prescott (The Walking Dead) as Madame Xanadu, Kevin Durand (The Strain) as Jason Woodrue, Virginia Madsen (American Gothic) as Maria Sunderland, Henderson Wade (Riverdale) as Matt Cable, Leonardo Nam (Westworld) as Harlan Edwards, Ian Ziering (Sharknado) as Blue Devil and Derek Mears (Friday the 13th) as Swamp Thing.
