Ewan McGregor excited to play Obi-Wan closer in age to Alec Guinness in new Star Wars series

October 30, 2019 by Samuel Brace

Ewan McGregor says he is excited to get to play Obi-Wan closer to the age of Alec Guinness in the Disney+ Star Wars series.

Ewan McGregor’s portrayal of a young Obi-Wan Kenobi was one of the major highlights of the Star Wars prequel trilogy and now that Lucasfilm are making an Obi-Wan spinoff series for Disney+, the actor is excited to return to the role.

In particular, McGregor has told ComicBook.com that he is looking forward to playing the character now that he is close to the age of Alec Guinness’ original portrayal of the character in A New Hope:

“What’s exciting for me to play him now is that I’m that much closer… The most exciting thing before was trying to play a younger Alec Guinness. To study Alec Guinness’ work and his performance in Star Wars and then try and feel like I was the younger version of him. That and the sword fights were pretty good fun to learn, as well. This time, I’m just going to be that much closer to him in age and it will be interesting to do that. The story takes place, you know when the story takes place. So, it’s quite interesting.”

The series will take place between the events of Episode III and A New Hope so fans should hopefully see a fusion of what McGregor has done in the past and the older, desert-worn version of the character.

The series will be written by Hossein Amini (The Alienist), with Deborah Chow (The Mandalorian) directing. Chow, Amini, and McGregor will serve as Executive Producers alongside Kathleen Kennedy, Tracey Seaward (The Queen) and John Swartz (Rogue One: A Star Wars Story).
