J.J. Abrams on why The Emperor is returning for Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker

October 1, 2019 by Liam Waddington

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker director J.J. Abrams has revealed why it was necessary to bring back Palpatine for the final episode of the Skywalker Saga.

In a recent interview with Empire Magazine, Abrams revealed bringing back the Emperor was a way of tying up the entire saga as a whole despite scepticism from fans.

“Some people feel like we shouldn’t revisit the idea of Palpatine, and I completely understand that,” Abrams said. “But if you’re looking at the nine films as one story, I don’t know many books where the last few chapters have nothing to do with those that have come before. If you look at the first eight films, all the set-ups of what we’re in IX are there in plain view.”

With The Rise of Skywalker releasing in December, it’s only a matter of time until we see if resurrecting the primary Star Wars villain is successful, or if fans will reject the idea of bringing back the Emperor after he met his (apparent) fate at the end of Return of the Jedi.

Do you believe it is a good idea to resurrect Darth Sidious in Episode IX? Let us know in the comments below or tweet us @flickeringmyth…

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker is set for release on December 19th 2019 in the UK and December 20th 2019 in North America with J.J. Abrams (Star Wars: The Force Awakens) directing a cast that includes Star Wars veterans Daisy Ridley (Rey), Adam Driver (Kylo Ren), John Boyega (Finn), Oscar Isaac (Poe Dameron), Lupita Nyong’o (Maz Kanata), Domhnall Gleeson (General Hux), Kelly Marie Tran (Rose Tico), Joonas Suotamo (Chewbacca), Billie Lourd (Lieutenant Connix), Greg Grunberg (Snap Wexley), Mark Hamill (Luke Skywalker), Anthony Daniels (C-3PO), Billy Dee Williams (Lando Calrissian) and Carrie Fisher (Leia Organa) as well as new additions Naomi Ackie (Lady Macbeth), Richard E. Grant (Logan), Dominic Monaghan (Lost), and Keri Russell (The Americans).
