Robert Downey Jr. responds to Martin Scorsese’s Marvel criticism

October 12, 2019 by Gary Collinson

Legendary filmmaker Martin Scorsese didn’t exactly endear himself to Marvel fans this past week, the Oscar-winning director stating that he avoids Marvel Cinematic Universe movies as “that’s not cinema”.

We’ve already heard responses from directors James Gunn (Guardians of the Galaxy) and Joss Whedon (The Avengers), and now Robert Downey Jr. has weighed in with his opinion on Scorsese’s criticisms during an appearance on Howard Stern’s show.

“It’s his opinion. I mean it plays in theaters,” said Downey, rather diplomatically. “I appreciate his opinion because I think it’s like anything. We need all of the different perspectives so we can come to center and move on.”

Meanwhile, in the same interview, Downey also went on to recall one of the last times he met the late, great Stan Lee when the two were shooting Stan’s cameo in Captain America: Civil War.
