J.J. Abrams says fans and critics of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker are both right

December 23, 2019 by Gary Collinson

Unleashed into theaters around the globe this weekend, Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker has been met with mixed reviews and reactions from critics and fans alike, and while it hasn’t quite reached The Last Jedi-levels of divisiveness, it certainly hasn’t brought the fractured fan base back together in the way that Disney and Lucasfilm had hoped it might.

Speaking to Vanity Fair (via GamesRadar) about the response from fans towards the movie, Episode IX director J.J. Abrams stated that “I would say that they’re right” when asked what he thinks of those who are unhappy with the climax to the Skywalker Saga, before adding that: “The people who love it more than anything are also right.”

“I was asked just seven hours ago in another country, ‘So how do you go about pleasing everyone?’” he continued. “I was like’ What…?’ Not to say that that’s what anyone should try to do anyway, but how would one go about it? Especially with Star Wars. We knew starting this that any decision we made — a design decision, a musical decision, a narrative decision — would please someone and infuriate someone else. And they’re all right.”

In fairness to Abrams, it was always going to be an impossible task to fully please everyone with The Rise of Skywalker, but let us know in the comments or on our social channels how well you think he succeeded (if at all)…

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker sees J.J. Abrams (Star Wars: The Force Awakens) directing a cast that includes Star Wars veterans Daisy Ridley (Rey), Adam Driver (Kylo Ren), John Boyega (Finn), Oscar Isaac (Poe Dameron), Lupita Nyong’o (Maz Kanata), Domhnall Gleeson (General Hux), Kelly Marie Tran (Rose Tico), Joonas Suotamo (Chewbacca), Billie Lourd (Lieutenant Connix), Greg Grunberg (Snap Wexley), Mark Hamill (Luke Skywalker), Anthony Daniels (C-3PO), Billy Dee Williams (Lando Calrissian) and Carrie Fisher (Leia Organa) as well as new additions Naomi Ackie (Lady Macbeth), Richard E. Grant (Logan), Dominic Monaghan (Lost), and Keri Russell (The Americans).
