David Ayer says he had the opportunity the helm the Suicide Squad sequel

January 9, 2020 by Liam Waddington

Director David Ayer has revealed that after directing Suicide Squad back in 2016, he was offered the opportunity to helm the sequel but he decided to pass on the chance.

“I had a chance to do it, but I went another way,” Ayer claimed in a recent interview with ComicBook.com after Fox’s presentation at TCA.

However, Ayer continued to state he definitely isn’t walking away from the comic book movie genre as it is a world he is “drawn to” and “it’s definitely an arena” he wants to “play in again.”

“I love the world creation of it and I love the power of the IP and the fans,” Ayer said. “It’s dangerous. It’s like juggling chainsaws, but I am drawn to it and it’s definitely an arena I’ll play in again.”

However, the next Suicide Squad film, The Suicide Squad, is being helmed by Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn and features some already established characters from Ayer’s original film including Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn, Jai Courtney’s Boomerang, Joel Kinnaman’s Rick Flag, and Viola Davis’ Amanda Waller.

Are you glad David Ayer turned down the opportunity to direct Suicide Squad 2? Are you looking forward to James Gunn’s sequel/soft reboot? Let us know in the comments below or tweet us @flickeringmyth…

The Suicide Squad is set for release on August 6th 2021 and features a cast that includes the returning Margot Robbie (Harley Quinn), Jai Courtney (Captain Boomerang), Joel Kinnaman (Rick Flag) and Viola Davis (Amanda Waller) alongside new DCEU additions Idris Elba, Peter Capaldi, John Cena, Alice Braga, Nathan Fillion, Taika Waititi, Jennifer Holland, David Dastmalchian, Joaquín Cosío, Mayling Ng, Flula Borg, Juan Diego Botto, Storm Reid, Pete Davidson, Tinashe Kajese, Daniela Melchior, Julio Ruiz, Steve Agee, Michael Rooker and Sean Gunn.
