Parasite becomes the highest grossing foreign language film in UK box office history

March 10, 2020 by Liam Waddington

Last month, Parasite made history at the Academy Awards by becoming the first foreign-language film to earn Best Picture while also taking home Best Director, Best Original Screenplay, and Best Foreign Language Film.

However, the Oscar-winning dark comedy-drama directed by Bong Joon Ho is continuing to break records as Parasite has now become the highest-grossing foreign-language film in UK box office history, surpassing The Passion Of The Christ.

The news comes from UK distributor Curzon Artificial Eye (via Deadline), which posted a celebratory tweet when Parasite broke the record on this past weekend.

Parasite had already earned a record-breaking debut in the UK, opening with $1.8 million including previews from an initial 136 sites, a new milestone for a foreign-language movie. However, once the film expanded to 400 cinemas, the grosses for Parasite went beyond Mel Gibson’s The Passion Of The Christ which earned $14,998,931 (£11,458,707) back in 2004.

While Parasite has been an overwhelming success financially, critically and earning plenty of accolades along the way, it didn’t take long for HBO to announce a limited series spin-off based upon the feature film with Mark Ruffalo confirming talks to play the father.

Are you surprised by the overwhelming success of Parasite? Are you excited about the prospect of a Parasite limited series? Let us know in the comments below or tweet us @flickeringmyth…
