Better Call Saul creators discuss Kim “breaking bad” in the season finale

April 25, 2020 by Samuel Brace

Better Call Saul‘s co-creators have discussed how Kim decided to “break bad” in the show’s season finale.

Throughout Better Call Saul‘s run, we have been waiting for Jimmy to take his dark turn and become Saul Goodman. He did that in the season four finale and it hasn’t worked out too well since then.

His terrible decision making has also led his wife Kim down her own dark path, resulting in what really has been a long time coming with her apparent decision to “break bad”. Seemingly taking things too far even for Jimmy with her plans to ruin Howard’s life for some quick cash, Variety asked co-creator Peter Gould what she is thinking right now:

“I think Jimmy’s asking the same question. After everything that’s happened, there’s one version where Kim says, ‘Enough is enough. I’ve had it with you, Jimmy McGill,’ and goes off into the sunset. But that doesn’t seem to be the choice she’s making. Kim is not a simple person, she’s a complex individual, and she pulls the rug out from under Jimmy at the end of the season. What that is going to mean and what the follow up on that is, is something I guess we’re all going to have to wait and see. There’s no doubt in my mind that she is very attached to Jimmy, and that she loves scamming with him. And in fact, that seems to be their favorite couples’ activity — which could turn out to be a problem.”

Gould added that the incident with Lalo in the previous episode “was more the breaking point for Jimmy in some ways” rather than Kim like some might expect.

Speaking to Rolling Stone, co-creator Vince Gilligan revealed when they decided to finally go down this route with Kim: “As we approached the last half of this season, it started feeling like — and maybe this isn’t the best phrase to use — maybe Kim Wexler breaks bad?“

It was certainly a big moment in the show and the ramifications could be pretty huge as we approach the Breaking Bad timeline. It should be fun to see how this all plays out and if Kim can come to her senses.
