Birds of Prey director wants to see a sequel featuring Harley Quinn and Poison Ivy

April 8, 2020 by Gary Collinson

Although the film only managed to muster around $200 million globally following its release earlier this year, Birds of Prey (And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) director Cathy Yan hasn’t given up hope of a sequel to the DC girl gang movie, and indeed she already has an idea of what she’d like to see in the next film.

“I would love to see Poison Ivy and I would certainly love to see the relationship between Harley Quinn and Poison Ivy,” Yan told The Wrap. “I don’t know [if a sequel will happen] — I think people aren’t ready to let go of Harley Quinn quite yet and you know, Margot I don’t think is ready to let go of Harley Quinn yet either, so… hopefully.”

We do know of course that Robbie’s Harley Quinn is set to return to the big screen next year, with a Paul Dini-esque Harley set to feature as part of the ensemble of James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad. Meanwhile, Warner Bros. and DC had planned to bring Harley, Poison Ivy and Catwoman together in Suicide Squad director David Ayer’s Gotham City Sirens, although that project was shelved when the decision was made to go with Birds of Prey. Whether we’ll ever see a revival of the concept remains to be seen…

Would you like to see Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn pairing up with Poison Ivy? Should Warner Bros. have stuck with a Gotham City Sirens movie rather than Birds of Prey? Let us know your thoughts in the comments, or on our social channels @FlickeringMyth…

Birds of Prey (And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) is a twisted tale told by Harley herself, as only Harley can tell it. When Gotham’s most nefariously narcissistic villain, Roman Sionis, and his zealous right-hand, Zsasz, put a target on a young girl named Cass, the city is turned upside down looking for her. Harley, Huntress, Black Canary and Renee Montoya’s paths collide, and the unlikely foursome have no choice but to team up to take Roman down.

Cathy Yan (Dead Pigs) directs Birds of Prey (And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) from a script by Christina Hodson (Bumblebee) with Margot Robbie reprising her Suicide Squad role as Harley Quinn alongside Mary Elizabeth Winstead (Fargo) as The Huntress, Jurnee Smollett-Bell (Underground) as Black Canary, Rosie Perez (Fearless) as Renee Montoya, Ella Jay Basco (Grey’s Anatomy) as Cassandra Cain, Ewan McGregor (Christopher Robin) as Black Mask, Chris Messina (Sharp Objects) as Victor Zsasz, Ali Wong (Black Box), Robert Catrini (Jack Reacher: Never Go Back), Steven Williams (The Chi), Dana Lee (Dr. Ken), Francois Chau (The Expanse) and Matthew Willig (The Ballad of Buster Scruggs).
