Hugh Jackman rules out Wolverine return in the Marvel Cinematic Universe

April 24, 2020 by Gary Collinson

During the last few years of his run as the character, Hugh Jackman repeatedly expressed his desire to see Wolverine teaming up with The Avengers on the big screen, only for rights issues to prevent that dream pairing from becoming a reality.

Of course, those rights issues have now been cleared, with the X-Men and Fantastic Four characters now available to Marvel Studios following Disney’s acquisition of 20th Century Fox. And while Ryan Reynolds has suggested that he’ll be continuing in his role as Deadpool under Marvel, it seems we can rule out the possibility of Jackman returning as Wolverine following his swansong in Logan.

“I knew it was the right time for me to leave the party-not just for me, but for the character,” said Jackman in an interview with The Daily Beast. “Somebody else will pick it up and run with it. It’s too good of a character not to. It’s kind of like, you’re on your way home and your friend rings you and goes, ‘Oh, dude, a new DJ just came on and the music is awesome, are you going to come back?’ And you say, ‘Sounds good but… no.’ They’re fine with someone else.”

While it may well be best for the Marvel Cinematic Universe long-term to recast the role, it’s certainly a shame that we never got to see Jackman’s Wolverine alongside some of Marvel’s other iconic superheroes. Unless of course they could squeeze in some kind of cameo in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness..? Sadly, that is perhaps just wishful thinking…

Who would you like to see taking on the role of Wolverine in the Marvel Cinematic Universe? Let us know in the comments or on our social channels @flickeringmyth…
