No Time to Die: Rami Malek’s “unsettling” Bond villain is a former SPECTRE assassin

October 28, 2020 by Samuel Brace

Rami Malek’s villain in No Time to Die has been confirmed as a former SPECTRE assassin with an “unsettling” quality to him.

While No Time to Die is dealing with its latest delay, news about the film is continuing to find its way into the public, including details about Rami Malek’s villain Safin.

In an interview with Malek by GQ, the article describes Safin in the following way:

“Here’s what we know so far about Safin: he’s a former Spectre assassin and a powerful figure in the world of terrorism.”

Fans of the Bond franchise will be very familiar with SPECTRE, the shadowy organisation behind so much of Bond’s pain over the years.

What else do we know about Safin? Well, according to Malek, he has a rather unsettling way about him:

“When I think about Safin I think about someone who is meticulous but measured, and there is something about that that is really unnerving and unsettling. He’s someone that at times I feel gives you the sensation that you’re being watched and that again is quite unsettling. He asks you to question what you think is right, what you think is wrong and is your interpretation of those two things as accurate as it seems to be.”

Hopefully, Safin makes for a memorable villain when we finally get to see the movie. In the history of Bond films, he has some tough competition but who knows, perhaps the character will become a true standout.

Bond has left active service and is enjoying a tranquil life in Jamaica. His peace is short-lived when his old friend Felix Leiter from the CIA turns up asking for help. The mission to rescue a kidnapped scientist turns out to be far more treacherous than expected, leading Bond onto the trail of a mysterious villain armed with dangerous new technology.

No Time To Die stars Daniel Craig (James Bond), Ralph Fiennes (M), Naomie Harris (Moneypenny), Rory Kinnear (Tanner), Léa Seydoux (Madeleine Swann), Ben Whishaw (Q), Jeffrey Wright (Felix Leiter) and Christoph Waltz (Blofeld), while new additions include Rami Malek (Bohemian Rhapsody), Ana de Armas (Knives Out), Lashana Lynch (Captain Marvel), Billy Magnussen (Velvet Buzzsaw), Dali Benssalah (A Faithful Man) and David Dencik (Top of the Lake).
