Robert Zemeckis’ The Witches gets a poster, trailer and HBO Max premiere

October 2, 2020 by Liam Waddington

Originally set for an October theatrical release, Robert Zemeckis’ new take on Roald Dahl’s The Witches is set to arrive on the HBO Max streaming service on October 22nd – just in time for the Halloween season. Check out the official posters and trailer here…

Robert Zemeckis’ The Witches was initially scheduled to debut on October 16th, before being moved a week forward to October 9th.  However, back in June, Warner Bros. undated the film from the theatrical release schedule until the decision to move the film onto the studio’s streaming service – presumably as a result of the ongoing global health crisis and the unpredictability on whether audiences will show up at the theatres.

The Witches is set to be directed by Zemeckis from a script he’s written alongside Kenya Barris (Black-ish) from an earlier draft by Guillermo del Toro (The Shape of Water). The film features a cast including Anne Hathaway (Les Miserables), Stanley Tucci (The Lovely Bones), Chris Rock (Grown Ups), Octavia Spencer (Ma), Kristin Chenoweth (Glee) and newcomers Jahzir Kadeem Bruno and Codie-Lei Eastick.

Zemeckis’ reimagining of the classic children’s book tells “the darkly humorous and heartwarming tale of a young orphaned boy (Bruno) who, in late 1967, goes to live with his loving Grandma (Spencer) in the rural Alabama town of Demopolis. The boy and his grandmother come across some deceptively glamorous but thoroughly diabolical witches, so Grandma wisely whisks our young hero away to an opulent seaside resort. Regrettably, they arrive at precisely the same time that the world’s Grand High Witch (Hathaway) has gathered her fellow cronies from around the globe—undercover—to carry out her nefarious plans.”
