Robert Rodriguez and James Cameron are “still very interested” in an Alita: Battle Angel sequel

December 21, 2021 by Matt Rodgers

For years Alita: Battle Angel was the passion project of James Cameron, before the Na’vi nixed that idea and he handed the reins to The Book of Boba Fett’s Robert Rodriguez, who has recently been discussing his hopes for a sequel while on the promotional trail for his December Disney+ series.

Alita wasn’t the kind of blockbuster hit it might have been had producer James Cameron remained behind the camera, grossing just over $400 million on a $170 million budget, but the critical response was fresh, Rosa Salazar was terrific in the lead role, and it has gathered enough of a passionate fanbase since 2019 that talk of a sequel often comes up.

And such was the case when director Robert Rodriguez was speaking to The Hollywood Reporter about everything from his female-led Zorro reboot, his Ben Affleck starring action-thriller Hypnotic, and the eagerly anticipated Star Wars series The Book of Boba Fett. When the subject of an Alita sequel came up, Rodriguez said “Jim and I talked about it recently, and we’re still very interested” adding “I told him, ‘Let me deliver Boba and then let’s figure out a pitch.'”

Maybe Rodriguez can have a chat with his friends at Disney+ to see if there’s the potential to continue the world building of Alita as a small screen adventure?
