Super Mario Bros. animated film delayed until Spring 2023

April 26, 2022 by EJ Moreno

While the casting of Chris Pratt hasn’t delighted everyone, there was some interest in the Super Mario Bros. film set for release later this year. Those curious fans will have to wait just a little longer to hear the sounds of Pratt’s Mario.

This week, the announcement came that the upcoming Super Mario Bros. movie will no longer have its December 21st release date. The film is now set for Spring 2023. In a tweet from Nintendo legend Shigeru Miyamoto, it was said that the delay was a joint decision from Pratt, Nintendo, and Illumination.

The tweet reads: “This is Miyamoto. After consulting with Chris-san, my partner at Illumination on the Super Mario Bros. film, we decided to move the global release to Spring 2023–April 28 in Japan and April 7 in North America. My deepest apologies, but I promise it will be well worth the wait.”

The move could help the film considerably, as the original release date was just days after James Cameron’s Avatar 2, which is supposed to hit theaters this December. With the first Avatar being just a dominant force, the folks at Nintendo and Illumination want to steer clear.
