Andor’s Diego Luna denies there was ever more than one ending for Rogue One: A Star Wars Story

October 3, 2022 by Matt Rodgers

Andor’s Diego Luna has been revisiting some of the most iconic scenes from his movies for Vanity Fair, and in doing so has revealed that from the moment he was onboard with Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, there was only ever that one memorable ending.

Ever since Rogue One blasted its way to $1 billion at the box-office in 2016 there has been multiple discussions about the wonderfully heroic downbeat ending. Everybody from Diego Luna’s son to the screenwriter and ILM’s Chief Creative Officer commentated on it and the existence of rumoured alternate endings.

Well, now Cassian Andor himself has spoken about the rumours whilst watching that iconic scene on Scariff, pausing the video to reveal that “the reason why I was so happy to play this role and so excited about the idea of being part of this universe because I thought it was so bold, so interesting, and so unique to have an ending like this. And I remember people say we shot different endings and, just to be clear, the day I was offered this role, I knew this was it.”

As if to underline the point Luna added “It was one film and I knew what the end was going to be. And it’s one of the things that excited me the most, you know, that Star Wars was going to do that, was going to show what sacrifice means, and was going to go for it.”

Luna also goes on to effuse about the darker approach that Rogue One took with its “mature” ending, and how Lucasfilm approached him about exploring the character of Cassian Andor further in the Disney+ series. Check out the full interview at Vanity Fair.

The “Andor” series will explore a new perspective from the Star Wars galaxy, focusing on Cassian Andor’s journey to discover the difference he can make. The series brings forward the tale of the burgeoning rebellion against the Empire and how people and planets became involved. It’s an era filled with danger, deception and intrigue where Cassian will embark on the path that is destined to turn him into a rebel hero.

Star Wars: Andor stars Diego Luna, who is reprising his Rogue One role as Cassian Andor, Genevieve O’Reilly as Mon Mothma, Forest Whitaker as Saw Gerrara, and Adria Arjona (6 Underground), Denise Gough (The Kid Who Would Be King), Kyle Soller (101 Dalmatian Street), Stellan Skarsgård (Chernobyl), Ben Miles (The Crown), Anton Lesser (Game of Thrones), and Robert Emms (His Dark Materials).

Star Wars: Andor is currently streaming on Disney+
