HBO’s The Last of Us premiere draws 4.7 million viewers

January 17, 2023 by Matt Rodgers

The Last of Us got off to a good start on Sunday night, drawing HBO’s second largest figures for a debut since 2010 with 4.7 million across linear and HBO Max.

Deadline reports that that amount only trails House of the Dragon‘s record breaking premiere of 9.986 million from last year, and is on par with Boardwalk Empire‘s 2010 viewership of 4.81 million. The story also states that Sunday night viewership typically represents 20%-40% of the show’s total gross audience per episode.

We called The Last of Us “a game-changer for how video game adaptations are handled in the future”, with “Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey delivering the greatest performances ever based on video game characters” in our glowing review, which you can read here. Let us know if you agree and what you thought of the premiere by heading to our social channels @FlickeringMyth…

The Last of Us story takes place twenty years after modern civilization has been destroyed. Joel, a hardened survivor, is hired to smuggle Ellie, a 14-year-old girl, out of an oppressive quarantine zone. What starts as a small job soon becomes a brutal, heartbreaking journey, as they both must traverse the U.S. and depend on each other for survival.

The Last of Us stars Pedro Pascal (The Mandalorian) as Joel and Bella Ramsey (Game of Thrones) as Ellie alongside Gabriel Luna, Merle Dandridge, Jeffrey Pierce, Anna Torv, Nico Parker, Murray Bartlett, Nick Offerman, Lamar Johnson, Storm Reid, Keivonn Woodard, Graham Greene and Elaine Miles.

The Last of Us airs weekly on HBO in the US and on Sky and NOW in the UK.
