Barbie co-stars Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling are teaming up once again and this time they’re going to the 1960s for a good ‘ol fashion heist movie.
This won’t be any heist film, though; reports say the actors are set to star in a prequel to the Ocean’s Eleven franchise in a new vintage installment. This Ocean’s Eleven prequel will come from director Jay Roach, written by Carrie Solomon. Gary Ross, Josey McNamara, Michelle Graham, Tom Ackerley, and Olivia Milch will produce.
The project has few details, but AP News got Roach to spill some details. The film will be set in 1962 in Monte Carlo during the Monaco Grand Prix. The filmmaker claims it will feel like an “old-fashioned epic love story/adventure disguised as a heist. The heist itself will take place on the private yacht of a famed shipping magnate.
This prequel will seem closer to the original 1960 film that starred Frank Sinatra, Sammy Davis Jr., and Angie Dickinson; think of a flashy mid-century aesthetic with glamourous outfits. We’ll also see Robbie and Gosling stretch their comedic chops even more, though expect a few action scenes given the actor’s pedigree; the pair’s characters reportedly “don’t trust each other, and they need to trust each other.”
Roach also adds that Alfred Hitchcock’s Notorious and To Catch a Thief are big inspirations for this project.
As for the franchise, this will serve as a prequel to the Steven Soderbergh-directed Ocean’s films from the early 2000s, which already received a spin-off dubbed Ocean’s 8. As a whole, the franchise has grossed over a billion dollars at the global box office.
Production List has the project starting filming as early as later this month.
