New Doctor Who star Ncuti Gatwa calls his incarnation of The Doctor “energetic” and “emotionally vulnerable”

July 12, 2023 by EJ Moreno

As we approach the dawn of a new Time Lord, fans are hungry for information concerning The Doctor’s fifteenth official incarnation.

That’s why Ncuti Gatwa is giving fans a little preview of what to expect in the upcoming new series of Doctor Who. Speaking to Rolling Stone UK in a recent interview, Gatwa reveals the first details of his Doctor’s personality.

He tells the outlet, “My Doctor is emotionally vulnerable. He hides it with humor, but he’s lonely. I can’t say much more than that; I don’t want to spoil anything. But he’s also energetic! The poor cameramen struggled to keep up.”

In the new Doctor Who series, we’ll see Gatwa taking over from Jodie Whittaker’s thirteenth version of The Doctor. This happens, though, after Whittaker shockingly regenerates into David Tennant, who is labeled as the fourteenth incarnation, at the end of the last series. Reports note that Tennant will play the role across three special episodes and eventually regenerate into Gatwa’s version by the end.

That’s when Ncuti Gatwa officially begins his era with the return of showrunner Russell T. Davies. The series will also star new companion Millie Gibson, as well as Aneurin Barnard, Jemma Redgrave, Anita Dobson, Indira Varma, Michelle Greenidge, Jinkx Monsoon, and Jonathan Groff.

Doctor Who returns in November 2023 with David Tennant’s three special episodes to coincide with the 60th anniversary. Ncuti Gatwa’s first episode as the Fifteenth Doctor will air over the festive period.

Doctor Who will premiere exclusively on the BBC for the UK and Ireland. Disney+ will be the exclusive home for the new seasons outside the UK and Ireland.
