The Hunger Games filmmaker Francis Lawrence has revealed to Gamespot that the planned Constantine sequel with Keanu Reeves is still happening despite the recent DC Studios overhaul, but the Hollywood strikes held things up.
Lawrence reveals, “So Constantine 2 got obviously held up by the writer’s strike, and we had to jump through a bunch of hurdles to get control of the character again because other people had control of the Vertigo stuff. We have control.”
“Keanu and Akiva Goldsman and I have been in meetings and have been hashing out what we think the story is going to be, and there’s more meetings of those that have to happen – the script has to be written – but really hoping that we get to do Constantine 2, and make a real rated R version of it,” the filmmaker continues.
This echoes the sentiment shared by Goldsman in a recent interview, where the writer confirmed to be still crafting the script. We are awaiting confirmation from Constantine to get all three figures on the same track.
Constantine 2 would see the character return in a possible Elseworlds story under James Gunn and Peter Safran’s new DC Studios. They are set to reboot the DC Universe but could leave room for a fan-favorite return on the level of Keanu Reeves. Francis Lawrence is promoting the prequel The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes, his return to the action-adventure franchise.
With all these busy schedules, there’s no release date in sight for Constantine 2.
