Supergirl: Milly Alcock, Emilia Jones and Meg Donnelly circling role in James Gunn’s DCU

January 10, 2024 by EJ Moreno

The dawn of a new age for DC Films is nearing, and the line-up for our latest batch of heroes is beginning to take shape.

As we know, David Corenswet will down the cape for Superman, and the rumors for Supergirl are now starting to trickle in. Deadline broke the news that DC Studios plans to test actresses soon to star in Supergirl.

Deadline reports the actress trio of Milly Alcock, Emilia Jones, and Meg Donnelly have been in talks for the role and will soon get auditions.

Alcock is best known for playing Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen in HBO’s Game of Thrones spinoff House of the Dragon. Jones is a beloved actress on the indie scene, where she led the Oscar-winning film CODA. Donnelly is already familiar with Supergirl, voicing her in the DC animated movies Legion of Superheroes and Justice League: Crisis on Infinite Earths Part One.

Deadline also notes that the search for the director is still ongoing.

In the press release when James Gunn first announced the DCU slate, he noted the Supergirl project will be based on Tom King’s Supergirl, Woman of Tomorrow. Gunn noted:

“In our series, we see the difference between Superman, who was sent to Earth and raised by loving parents from the time he was an infant, versus Supergirl, who was raised on a rock, a chip off Krypton, and watched everyone around her die and be killed in terrible ways for the first 14 years of her life, and then came to Earth when she was a young girl. She’s much more hardcore; she’s not exactly the Supergirl we’re used to seeing.”

Little is known about this character’s debut, but Deadline notes that the introduction to Supergirl will likely happen via a cameo in another DCU project. Could she be teased in or at least as the post-credit scene for Superman: Legacy? Only time will tell.

James Gunn relaunches DC with Superman: Legacy in July 2025.

“Superman: Legacy tells the story of Superman’s journey to reconcile his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing as Clark Kent of Smallville, Kansas. He is the embodiment of truth, justice, and the American way, guided by human kindness in a world that sees kindness as old-fashioned.”

Superman: Legacy stars David Corenswet as Superman, Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor, Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen, Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl, Edi Gathegi as Mister Terrific, Nathan Fillion as Green Lantern/Guy Gardner, Anthony Carrigan as Metamorpho, Sara Sampaio as Eve Teschmacher, and María Gabriela De Faría as The Engineer.

Superman: Legacy is scheduled to open in theaters on July 11th, 2025.
