Is Sam Raimi returning to the MCU for Spider-Man 4?

April 17, 2024 by EJ Moreno

When Sam Raimi was hired for Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, fans clamored for another Spider-Man outing.

Things got even wilder when the multiverse was ripped up, so heroes and villains from the Sony Spider-Man movies Raimi helmed began appearing in the MCU. As fans waited patiently, things could be paying off, with the filmmaker in contention for a new Spider-Man film.

This time, though, Raimi won’t be teaming up with Tobey Maguire for the much-talked-about Spider-Man 4. As reported by World of Reel, the filmmaker is in talks to helm Tom Holland’s fourth outing as Spider-Man.

While we’ll take any scoop with a grain of salt, the hunt for a new Spider-Man director has been heating up in recent months. Jon Watts won’t return for another installment of his Spider-Man movies with Holland and as a co-partner with Marvel Studios & Sony. Watts will be working on other projects and can’t commit to another Spider-Man film.

The studios have been circling other filmmakers like Justin Lin and Drew Goddard, but nothing has aligned between the studio and the director. As for Raimi, World of Reel notes that no official offer has been made. The Evil Dead filmmaker is set to helm the new horror thriller Send Help, but he could adjust his schedule for a Spidey return.

Raimi helmed Spider-Man in 2000, which grossed $825,025,036; he’d helm two sequels, putting his collective gross over $2.1 billion at the box office alone. He’d later return to superhero films with Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, a film that grossed $955.8 million in 2022.

The latest Spider-Man film, No Way Home, was nothing to scoff at. The multiverse film, which featured Holland, Maguire, and Andrew Garfield all as Spider-Man, would gross a whopping $1.922 billion during the pandemic-era box office of 2021.

World of Reel also notes that John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein, who directed 2023’s Dungeons & Dragons and wrote 2017’s Spider-Man: Homecoming, are also in the running.

Stay tuned for any updates concerning Spider-Man 4…
