Luke Owen reviews Sex #4…
I really, really enjoyed last month’s issue of Sex. But I would describe Sex #4 the same way I would talk about Dexter: Season Seven – stuff happens. Just some stuff. Most it feels like it’s important but when you actually break it down, not a lot is accomplished.
It’s really hard to make critical comments on this issue as there isn’t a whole lot to say about it. It’s a good read granted, but it feels like an entire issue of two characters talking to each other about the plot. Each page and scene merges into the next with nothing changed except for the background. The dialogue is good and engaging, but I can’t say that this has moved the story any further than Sex #3 did.
Which is a real shame as the last issue had me intrigued for this one. It had a great build and pace which lead to a fantastic closing scene that showed the relationships of two of our main characters, but this one doesn’t lead to anything. It just meanders along at a very slow and unbalanced pace.
While it sounds like I’m being negative, I’m not. Sex #4 is a good comic. It’s well written, it’s well drawn and there is still a level of intrigue that has kept my interest. But it does feel like a place holder issue. While I can’t back up this claim, I get the feeling that you could skip over this issue and go into Sex #5 without feeling like you’re lost.
I’m just hoping that it gets us back on track.
