ABC officially working on Scrubs revival with original cast returning

December 8, 2024 by EJ Moreno

Laughter is the best medicine, and Scrubs wants to give fans exactly what they need as Deadline confirms that a new Scrubs reboot is officially being developed at ABC by 20th Television, with series creator/executive producer Bill Lawrence involved.

It was reported that an agreement was worked out that allowed Lawrence, under an exclusive overall deal and with four series with Warner Bros TV, to develop this series for Disney’s 20th TV and ABC, but he won’t serve as the showrunner.

Zach Braff (John “J.D.” Dorian), Sarah Chalke (Elliot Reid), Donald Faison (Christopher Turk), and John C. McGinley (Perry Cox) are all eyed for a return. At the time of this reporting, the rest of the cast is still being worked out.

Scrubs is a medical comedy-drama television series that aired from 2001 to 2010. The show takes place at Sacred Heart Hospital and follows a group of young doctors as they navigate the ups and downs of their medical careers and personal lives. The protagonist, J.D. (Braff), is a fresh medical school graduate starting his residency. The original series was primarily told from J.D.’s perspective, combining voiceovers, dream sequences, and fantasy moments to depict his inner thoughts and imagination.

While the show initially ran for nine seasons, the final season (season 9) shifted tone and focus to new characters, leading to a mixed reception. Somehow, it remained a fan favorite, and the fanbase seems intrigued by this latest outing.
