Amazon Prime sets Good Omens premiere, Frances McDormand and Benedict Cumberbatch to play God and Satan

February 14, 2019 by Ricky Church

After much anticipation, fans of Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett’s novel Good Omens can finally mark their calendars for Amazon Prime’s adaptation. The streaming service has set a premiere date for May 31st on both Amazon Prime and BBC Two in the UK.

The series stars David Tennant (Jessica Jones) and Michael Sheen (Masters of Sex) as the fast-living demon Crowley and fussy angel Aziraphale, respectively. Jon Hamm (Mad Men) is also starring as the archangel Gabriel while Amazon confirmed Frances McDormand (Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri) will portray God and Benedict Cumberbatch (Sherlock) Satan.

The six-episode adaptation comes from Gaiman himself, acting as the series’ producer, writer and showrunner, and was directed by Douglas Mackinnon (Doctor Who).

According to the Nice and Accurate Prophecies of Agnes Nutter, Witch – the world’s only totally reliable guide to the future, written in 1655, before she exploded – the world will end on a Saturday. Next Saturday, in fact. Just after tea…

People have been predicting the end of the world almost from its very beginning, so it’s only natural to be sceptical when a new date is set for Judgement Day. This time though, the armies of Good and Evil really do appear to be massing. The four Bikers of the Apocalypse are hitting the road. But both the angels and demons – well, one fast-living demon and a somewhat fussy angel – would quite like the Rapture not to happen.

And someone seems to have misplaced the Antichrist…

Good Omens will air on Amazon Prime and BBC Two in 2019, and features a cast that includes David Tennant (Jessica Jones), Michael Sheen (Masters of Sex), Michael McKean (Better Call Saul), Frances McDormand (Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri), Benedict Cumberbatch (Sherlock), Miranda Richardson (Churchill), Adria Arjona (True Detective), Nina Sosanya (Marcella), Ned Dennehy (Peaky Blinders), Ariyon Bakare (New Blood), Anna Maxwell Martin (Becoming Jane), Lourdes Faberes (Knightfall), and Yusuf Gatewood (The Originals).
