Amazon Studios is looking to the world of video games as it seeks to expand its film and television output, with Collider reporting that the streamer is looking to bring Life Is Strange and Disco Elysium to life with TV adaptations.
As revealed by the outlet, Amazon has signed a deal with dj2 Entertainment, the transmedia production company behind the recent Sonic the Hedgehog movie, which will give Prime Video first refusal on any video game-related projects from the company.
First up as part of the deal are small screen adaptations of Square Enix and Dontnod Entertainment’s acclaimed adventure title Life is Strange, along with the indie hit Disco Elysium from ZA/UM hit, both of which are said to be in the very early stages of development.
“The dj2 team has long believed that video games would one day serve as incredible source material for stories told in television and film, and that it was only the lack of love and respect for the artform which previously held successful adaptations back,” said Dmitri M. Johnson of dj2. “Moreover, it is truly an honor to have Prime Video as our platform partner. A partner who truly supports us, as well as our grand ambitions, for telling the best international gaming stories with no limitations in how high we may collectively aim.”
“I cannot express enough just how excited we are to be working with the powerhouse team at dj2 Entertainment,” added Nick Pepper of Amazon Studios. “Their expertise and skill in the gaming-to-screen market is unparalleled. The possibilities are endless for what we can create together for our global audiences.”
dj2 has set up a host of video adaptations over the past few years, with IPs such as My Friend Pedro, Little Nightmares, Sleeping Dogs, We Happy Few, and Indivisible all announced, although so far only Sonic the Hedgehog has made it to the screen. Perhaps with Amazon on board, we’ll now start seeing a little more success on that front…
