Spoilers for Star Wars: The Last Jedi follow…
While the vast majority of Star Wars fans expected Supreme Leader Snoke to serve as the ultimate big bad of the Sequel Trilogy, director Rian Johnson threw us a curve ball in Star Wars: The Last Jedi when the villain was cut down by his apprentice Kylo Ren midway through the movie.
Speaking to Slash Film during a promotional interview for his new movie Black Panther, Andy Serkis discusses his reaction to the big twist, as well as addressing the possibility that we might see Snoke in J.J. Abrams’ Star Wars: Episode IX.
“Look, it’s Star Wars, so you never know how life, or whether life can be come back to or not. Whether you can be resuscitated or brought back. I was shocked. Dramatically, it felt absolutely right for that moment in the film, so I didn’t question it. I just think it’s a very, very important scene, so I didn’t question it. But I do, I know it’s left fans feeling like, that they were really searching for something there. And what I’m saying is, who knows?”
Despite his demise, it’s not entirely out of the question that we could see Snoke back for Episode IX. There are a lot of theories out there suggesting that he may have been using some kind of Luke Skywalker-like Force Projection technique in order to have Kylo Ren fully embrace the Dark Side, and is still alive. Flashbacks are of course one other way of bringing him back, as is that of a Dark Side Force Ghost. But, given his apparent fate in The Last Jedi, we’d have to assume that Lucasfilm would want to keep any return a secret until the release of the movie next year.
