Aquaman tops Justice League and Man of Steel at the worldwide box office

December 29, 2018 by Gary Collinson

2017 was a mixed bag for the DC Extended Universe. After the critical highs and commercial success of Wonder Woman, the DCEU almost derailed itself later in the year with Justice League. After enduring a troubled production, the superhero team-up underperformed at the box office and led to a major behind-the-scenes shake-up and refocussing at DC Films.

Well, it appears that things are now well and truly back on track, with the latest chapter of the DCEU, the Jason Momoa-headlined Aquaman, making a huge splash at the box office this month – so much so that it has aready surpassed the entire worldwide gross of Justice League.

By close of play on Friday, Aquaman had grossed $154.3 million domestically, with a further $511.8 million internationally, for a grand total of $666.1 million. That puts it ahead of Justice League’s $657.9 million, and by the time you read this, it will also have overtaken the $668 million haul of 2013’s Man of Steel.

Aquaman is expected to gross around $52.1 million domestically this weekend, which coupled with international grosses, may see the movie hit the $750 million mark. If so, then it would put it ahead of Suicide Squad ($746.8 million), with only Wonder Woman ($821.8 million) and Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice ($873.6 million) ahead of it.

From Warner Bros. Pictures and director James Wan comes an action-packed adventure that spans the vast, visually breathtaking underwater world of the seven seas, “Aquaman”, starring Jason Momoa in the title role. The film reveals the origin story of half-human, half-Atlantean Arthur Curry and takes him on the journey of his lifetime — one that will not only force him to face who he really is, but to discover if he is worthy of who he was born to be … a king.”

Aquaman is directed by James Wan (The Conjuring) and stars Jason Momoa as the titular hero, reprising his role from Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Justice League, along with Amber Heard as Mera, Patrick Wilson as Ocean Master, Willem Dafoe as Dr. Vulko, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II as Black Manta, Dolph Lundgren as King Nereus, Nicole Kidman as Atlanna, Temuera Morrison as Tom Curry, Ludi Lin as Murk, Michael Beach as Jesse Kane, Djimon Hounsou as the Fisherman King, Randall Park as Dr. Stephen Shin, Otis Dhanji as a young Arthur Curry, Julie Andrews as Karathen and Graham McTavish as King Atlan.
