Arnold Schwarzenegger, Danny DeVito and Eddie Murphy to star in Triplets?

March 30, 2012 by admin

If you’ve read The Hollywood Reporter today, you’d be forgiven for thinking that April Fools’ Day has come early with the news that Arnold Schwarzenegger and Danny DeVito are set to re-team for a sequel to 1988’s Twins. Entitled Triplets, the proposed follow-up would see brothers Julius and Vincent discovering they have a third genetically-conceived brother, apparently to be portrayed by former funnyman Eddie Murphy.

According to the report, Schwarzenegger, DeVito and Murphy are all attached to star, while Twins director Ivan Reitman will produce alongside Joe Medjuk, Tom Pollock and Ali Bell on behalf of his production company The Montecito Picture Company. As of yet, the sequel is without a director or screenwriter and THR go on to suggest “that no substantial creative discussions have taken place between Universal and Montecito” which hopefully translates to “Universal thinks it’s a horrendous idea but don’t want to upset Schwarzenegger.”

Twins marked Arnie’s first foray into the “family film” genre, and while it was a huge success – grossing $216m world-wide from a $15m budget – one would suspect there hasn’t been too much anticipation for a sequel over the years, except perhaps from Danny DeVito’s accountant. Couple that with the addition of Murphy – whose recent career offerings include a string of critical flops in Norbit, Meet Dave, Imagine That and A Thousand Words – and this one looks to have disaster written all over it.
